Life journey of a dog

George’s whelping box

I like using a hard plastic 46″ children’s wading pool as a whelp box. When the puppies get large enough, we cut a “passageway” so they can move in and out as they start exploring their universe. The pool/box is their safe place where they cuddle up and take their naps, with sheets and blankets piled about, a few stuffed toys to absorb the litter smells that each puppy takes home with their new families.

Yesterday we put Daisy’s “box” in the laundry room and tossed in some thrift shop blankets and sheets, so she has a week to get used to it.

The laundry room is also where Chase had her litter 5 years ago, and where Daisy and George were born. Within minutes after setting up the box, George made himself very comfortably at home in it, in spite of the fact that it is out of sight to us humans, who of course he likes to keep an eye on.

So I’m wondering…how much does he remember of his first 4-5 weeks of life, when he lived in a similar “box”, in that laundry room with his mom and 6 littermates?
